This piece was forged and finished by hand in Quebec as a singular expression of an ongoing exploration in form and balance.
It is built for daily use, but carries the intention of lasting far beyond it.
This knife reflects a more deliberate phase of the work — where creativity, choice of material and process are pushed slightly further.
The blade was shaped and refined by hand, displaying a 3 layers construction of steel (san mai), with a thickness that makes it robust and optimal for everyday use (everyday carry knife). The tanto point makes it ideal for accurate work, such as opening boxes.
The handle and saya were carefully made from a single piece of ash wood, charred by a propane torch in order to give it character and reveal the beautiful open wood grain. The handle is detachable by use of the side tool, for maintenance and occasional thorough cleaning. The purpose is also to displays an authentic construct with only the use of brass pins to hold the handle in place (like japanse swords were made).
Natural variation, grain, nut holes and subtle irregularities are not corrected — they are preserved as part of the knife’s character.
Like all my work, it is meant to be used regularly. Over time, the surface will shift and the patina will deepen.
